  • *Given the lesser drive to expand one’s social interactions beyond an existing circle, hook ups will be with friends or friendly acquaintances far more than with strangers or people met at parties, etc. This goes along with the thoughtfulness and quiet confidence that is so fashionable.
**Before, it was in to be aware of one’s own troped being. This involves a partially false performance or insecurity. Sticking to a trope was a way of coping with insecurity with tru individuality.
***The social focus is inward or at least more immediate. People are/will be less occupied with expansion or climbing and more with awareness of their own position and what it means in relation to others and their actions. By being ironically aware of this, people were able to at once deal with this while expressing their self-awareness. Now, this is out and being quietly original is IN. This easily relates to “self-branding as a by-product”
^Greys, beiges, periwinkle, etc. Because black as a statement is out and it’s summer, people will veer towards these soft neutrals. The art of coupling them with a color is also in AND should not be avoided out of fear bc such fear is OUT.
    ^^Refer to Eggsthetics facebook group
^^^This can be related to the uprising of quick DIY food videos on Facebook as well as the non-necessity of being frivolous. Frivolity and whimsicality are out. Frivolity is, however, more grounded because action is a feature of it. Frivolity = whimsicality + action. Whimsicality is more out. HOWEVER, shitting on people for enjoying things like expensive avocado toast is out. Please refer to opening essay!

    Notes on the list

The major concept is quiet comfort. Quietly enjoying and disliking things is replacing/will largely replace showy expressions of strong opinions that arise from insecurity in said opinions. This will apply socially (where light tolerance will be the norm, as pettiness is in but cattiness is out) and in taste, among other sociocultural and personal locales. As people are quiet about their thoughts and opinions, they will be more authentic, and less performative in an excessive manner. (performance for performance’s sake or as an honest expression remains fashionable). Whereas until recently it has been in to be clearly aware of one’s own troped qualities or sets of qualities, this is only a step to disavowal of a troped existence. Security and confidence lead to performance for validation becoming unnecessary. Additionally, people will be less outspoken about things like food restrictions or matters of taste. Instead, people will quietly enjoy their idiosyncratic things, tolerating it equally quietly when their taste cannot be fully fulfilled in a situation. If you like a fancy brand of bottled cold brew, nobody cares. There's no more need to make it known or even a part of one’s personality. This apathy creates a trend towards the other direction: you can enjoy it without fear of ridicule.
Another key to this point is the aspect of thoughtfulness. Quietness enforces a thoughtfulness and reflection. People are becoming/will be more thoughtful about themselves and their actions (especially expressions of taste, preferences, opinions, etc.) These actions are not necessarily quiet themselves. The creation of them and the thinking behind them is. This relates further to the theme of reductionism in January’s list and can be connected to the items like “trimming the social fat."
The other (but very connected) central concept to what is IN is curation. Careful ordering and choosing will lead to other actions, thoughts, etc. that are IN. Rather than an indiscriminate trimming, people are just thoughtfully creating their social and aesthetic environments and existence. This is a clear development from Winter’s List.
We suggest that you keep this overarching concept in mind as you consider the list.
